The Bay Bridge is a cantilever bridge, which means that only end of the bridge is anchored, with the other end projected horizonatally into space. The Chief Engineer, C.H.     Postcard shows a photo of the steel deck of the bridge being lifted from barges in the bay and hoisted to the suspending cables, on January 5, 1936. The decking was completed to Yerba Buena Island three months later. Its two levels enclosed an area 58 feet wide and 76 feet high.
