10. The Bridge is Dedicated! - Postcards
Postcard shows a photo of November 12, 1936 as the toll plaza officially opened. Pedestrians were not allowed to walk on the bridge, but 5000 San Franciscans walked onto the bridge, creating a massive traffic jam. While it was open, the bridge was not yet finished, as tracks for interurban electric tracks still had to be installed on the lower deck. The Bay Bridge is a cantilever bridge, which means that only end of the bridge is anchored, with the other end projected horizonatally into space. The Chief Engineer, C.H. The decking was completed to Yerba Buena Island three months later. Its two levels enclosed an area 58 feet wide and 76 feet high.
