Description |
Soliders, firemen, and others Fire fighters with shovels retreating downhill to avoid advancing fire in 1913. In July 1913, a massive forest fire threatened Mt. Tamalpais, the Mt. Tamalpais and Muir Woods Railway, and several towns in Marin, including Mill Valley. In the first 12 hours on July 7, 1913, the fire burned more than 2,000 acres of dry chapparal, grass and resinous pine trees in the Fern Canyon area on the south side of the mountain. The fire raged for five days, battled by Army troops from the San Francisco Presidio, by foresters, railroad employees and a hastily organized team of Mill Valley residents. On July 11, with more than 7,000 men fighting the blaze, the fire was finally conquered, leaving the southerly slopes of Tamalpais above the railroad line blackened and scorched. No buildings burned, the railway was untouched, and Mill Valley was spared. |
