Description |
Built after World War I, Joe Bickerstaff built and operated Joe's Place in Muir Woods, a popular gathering spot where hikers and railroad patrons danced and bought refreshments. The building was located in the 1920's annex parking lot in Muir Woods. It was known as a notorious gathering spot for San Francisco's North Beach residents. It was rumored to be bootleg establishment during prohibition. Notes on back read: '3/25/80 John Wilson: "Joe's Place was a rendevouz for people from North Beach in the 1920s. People from Howard St. were there also. "Girls" came too and normally had flaming red hair (dyed). They all brought booze. You could buy booze there too.The men would get drunk and fight. The cops would come. The place was dangerous."; "Bldg on Rt - blt [built] 1931 - Muir Woods Inn. Joes Landgaff built "Coffee Joe's". |
