Description |
The first Mountain Play performance, "Abraham and Isaac," was staged on May 4, 1913. A group of Mount Tamalpais hikers is credited with first envisioning the natural amphitheater, at a two thousand foot elevation near Rock Spring, as an ideal place to stage a play. The audience of 1,200 sat on the ground, as it wasn't until 1933 that the serpentine rocks that are now used as seating were hauled up Mount Tamalpais by the Civilian Conservation Corps. There are two versions of this photograph; the same image with different exposures. |
