Description |
Hikers Retreat on Throckmorton and of Madrona Avenues in the early 1920s. Checking facilities, lockers, and showers were available to hikers coming over from San Francisco by ferry and train. From the number of runners in the picture, this might have been taken the day of a Dipsea Race. In 1977 Yesteryears Antiques occupied the corner store at 154 Throckmorton Avenue. Note on back reads: "Bennetts Building 154-160 Throckmorton. Built in 1906 - 1 1/2 story English stucco and wood structure with gables in front and on end. Was home of Mill Valley's first bank, Bank of Mill Valley. From 1911 to 1920 it was used as a "Hiker's Retreat" with checking facilities, lockers, and showers available to hikers coming from SF by ferry and train. Remodelled extensively in 1920." |
