Description |
Mitsuru "Scoops" Kanki (1910-1946) sold newspapers in Mill Valley from 1920-1941. Here he holds a copy of the Colorado newspaper, The Pueblo Chieftain, with the headline, "Allied Bombs Break Italy's Silence." The Kanki family lived at 6 Bernard Street in Mill Valley but were sent to Amache (also known as the Granada Relocation Center), an internment camp in Denver, CO in May 1941. Mitsuru continued to sell newspapers inside the camp, where he changed his last name to Johnson. It is likely this photograph was taken at the camp. Parents Saburo and Katsu returned to Mill Valley in June 1947 but Mitsuru moved to Chicago, where he passed away in 1946. |
