Oral History of Gordon Foster |

Oral History |
Scope & Content |
The Reverend Gordon Foster was born August 28, 1914 in Detroit. His father was dean of Springfield College in Massachusetts, and while the family lived there young Gordon contracted polio and lost the use of one arm. While being treated in Warm Springs, Georgia, the family became friends with Franklin Delano Roosevelt and his family. Gordon's family subsequently moved to southern California, where he met his wife Marjorie while in college. After college, Gordon and Marjorie moved to Berkeley together and Gordon started studying for the ministry at the Pacific School of Religion. They settled in Mill Valley in 1947, where Gordon became pastor of the Mill Valley Community Church. Gordon and Marjorie raised four children together (and had five grandchildren at the time this oral history was conducted). In 1970, Gordon launched a new career as a counselor in the Jungian tradition. Throughout this oral history, Gordon discusses his life, his work, and old Mill Valley in the context of the major political events and cultural developments of the 20th century. |
